Palestra San Niccolò

Burn off last night’s carbs at Palestra San Niccolò, a flexible gym with a wide variety of regularly run activities and events, there is certainly something for everyone. Classes such as karate, gymnastics and dance are available for children, while adults can get in touch with their spiritual side with some yoga and pilates or for those braver, more adventurous individuals, why not get stuck in to some aerial dance or the Brazilian martial art of capoeira.  Conveniently situated near to the Arno River, the gym is open weekdays from 7am-11pm and weekends for various events.

This budget-friendly gym is perfect for those not fussed by the latest technology and gadgets but just looking for a more basic, affordable workout. Opened in 1985, this downtown gym is structured on two levels, with all the facilities you need, including cardio and strength-training, not forgetting the range of endurance and toning courses that run throughout the day, all included in the fee. Found centrally on Via dei Pepi, in between the Piazza Santa Croce and the Sant’Ambrogio market, it makes ease for a quick coffee stop in one of the area’s many bars, as a perfect post-workout boost. If you live a bit further afield, there are nearby bus stops at Via dell’Agnolo, Via Ghibellina, as well as Via Verdi.

Palestra Nidiaci

This gym, located in the Oltrarno heart has a bountiful history behind its existence. Dating back to the immediate post-war period, the Nidiaci family donated the building they previously used as a warehouse, to the City of Florence, which later became used as a gymnasium. From the early nineties, the gym has undergone various maintenance works and restyling to make it the unique and successful training facility it is today. Get your blood pumping with the gyms historic practice of Greco-Roman wrestling and with fighters having been known to previously wrestle in the likes of Santa Croce and Santa Maria Novella, it could soon be your turn to take to the streets and show Florence what you’ve got! You can also try your hand at free-style wrestling, boxing, Brazilian jiu jitsu or pilates, with lessons varying in age and level. This is certainly not your average gym experience.
