Japanese Tourists are the Biggest Spenders

Germans are still the most numerous tourists in Italy, making up 23% of all visitors in 2004. U.S. citizens follow at 11.2%, British at 8.8%, French at 9% and Japanese at 1%. The numbers are reversed for the amount each nationality spends per person while in Italy. Japanese spend an average of 141 euro per day, Americans 110 euro, British 104, and Germans 80. Most is spent on lodging (43%), then food and shopping (21%), and lastly, transportation (10%).
