According to a study by Anlaids (National Association for the Fight Against AIDS), there were 94 new AIDS cases reported in Tuscany in 2004.  Of these cases, 12 of the infected were drug addicts, 19 ex-drug addicts, 26 heterosexuals, and 28 homosexuals. This is a notable reduction from the peak number of cases reported in 1995, when 363 were registered, and 287 AIDS-related deaths occurred within the same year.
