Florence
celebrated U.S. Independence Day with the restoration of one of America’s
champions of independence-George Washington.

The
bust of the American forefather, located in Piazzale Kennedy in the Cascine
Park, had been losing bits of its nose for some time. According to architecture
students at the Scuola Professionale Edile di Firenze, who helped restore the
statue, it had fallen into a state of decadence. Thanks to the Tuscan-USA
Association, restorative efforts have given new life, and a new face, to one of
America’s most illustrious statesmen.

The
celebration, held on July 5, was followed by a traditional July Fourth barbeque
and festival complete with live music, dancing, hamburgers, watermelon and
more.
