The
Italian government has announced plans to hit unrepresented self-employed
professionals with another 2.2% increase on their already staggeringly high
national insurance contributions. If the proposal is passed next year, it will
effectively force many of these freelancers out of work. ACTA (Associazione
Consulenti Terziario Avanzato), an association created to support this
unprotected category of freelancers (who lack a professional ‘register’ and all
the benefits that come with it; this applies to translators, web designers and
so forth) is sounding the alarm in an effort to galvanise the vulnerable
workers it represents. On December 1, simultaneous rallies were held in Rome and Milan to protest the threatened
increases.
