The campaign by Florence’s public bus service, Ataf, to enforce the purchase of bus tickets has brought fruit. This is the first year since the 1950s that Ataf has broken even, officials recently announced. In 2009, Ataf recorded a 4.3 million euro deficit; so far in 2010, the firm has been restructured and it has increased credit collection and stepped up enforcement of payment for rides to break even. In the last nine months, Ataf has tripled the number of fines to ticketless passengers, issuing on average 10,000 fines a month, 300 a day.
