With the months-long garbage crisis in Naples hitting extraordinary proportions in late November, 19 of Italy’s 20 regions have agreed to take the city’s rubbish to help clear the streets. Tuscany was among the first to agree to the plan to resolve the emergency.

On November 20, Enrico Rossi, president of the Tuscan Region, said in an interview with Corriere della Sera, ‘We are ready to take garbage from the Campania region: we … will not refuse garbage from Naples because it is a national problem. We only hope that the [other] regions will follow us on this and that the problem is resolved in Campania with seriousness.’

‘One thing must be clear,’ Rossi continued, ‘our openness to help out in the emergency is not an act of help to the government, but a way to unmask the politics of announcements, advertisements and egoisms that has been exercised by Berlusconi, a government that has failed on all fronts. In Naples, where on October 29 the prime minister declared that the emergency would be resolved in three days, today we can see the results  . . . We are helping citizens. It is a pity to see Neapolitans buried under their own refuse. Our gesture is also a way to explain to this country that values like solidarity and dignity are still meaningful.’

Tuscany, along with another 18 regions, has agreed to dispose of 600 tonnes of Naples’ garbage per day for the next three months. Only Veneto, still devastated by the massive floods of early November, has not signed on to take any refuse.

The Italian government has also sent about 400 soldiers to Naples and nearby towns to help in collection and disposal efforts.
