A collection of priceless volumes will live in the
virtual world thanks to researchers from the Instituto Tecip (‘Technology of
Communication, Information and Perception’) of the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna
in Pisa.

Part of the
Mubil Project, perceptual robotics researchers from the Instituto Tecip, in
particular those at the Laboratorio Percro, in partnership with the Gunnerus
Library of Trondheim from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology,
will experiment with the latest high-technology tools to digitize a collection
of old books. Through 3-D interactive technology and enhanced reality software,
the ancient volumes will come ‘back to life.’

Part of the
Mubil project is the creation of an application of ‘digital storytelling’ for
the narration of selected images from the books through 3-D animation.
Interactive elements of the text will help engage users in understanding a
book’s historical context and importance.
