On June 11, officials
of the ACF Fiorentina presented Viola fans the team’s new head coach, Vincenzo
Montella. The team signed Montella for a two-year deal, with an option for a
third season.

Born in Castello di
Cisterna on June 18, 1974, Montella has managed AS Roma. Last season, he was
the head coach at Catania, bringing the Sicilian team to an all-time record in
Serie A standings.

Presenting Montella
was another newcomer: sports director Daniele Pradè, who replaced Pantaleo
Corvino.

Pradè commented on
the importance of finding a replacement for former coach Delio Rossi who
resigned after a violent outburst during one of the last games of the 2011-2012
season, saying ‘As I had previously announced, our priority was the appointment
of our new coach.’

He then explained
that he chose Montella ‘Because he’s young, capable, motivated, innovative and
reflects the ethical values of our owners. We all share our decisions together
and we will do everything together.’

At the press
conference, Montella told the press, ‘I feel great joy and enthusiasm.
Fiorentina has shown a lot of trust on me. I must thank the Della Valle family
and sports director Daniele Pradè for choosing me. Managing Fiorentina is a
massive responsibility. The owners asked me to bring back enthusiasm. We want
to get as close as possible to our fans.’

With the summer
transfer market ending on August 31, the club has been working to beef up its
roster. Among the new faces are Ahmed Hegazy from Ismaily Sporting Club, who
was signed on a permanent deal on June 6; and Amidu Salifu, on loan from Calcio
Catania.

Among those confirmed
to leave are former team captain Riccardo Montolivo, who goes to Milan next
season. Doubts still remain about whether Stefan Jovetic will stay with the
team.

On August 18, the ACF
Fiorentina will debut in the 2012-2013 Tim Cup/Coppa Italia, entering the
competition in the third round.
