As the recession takes its toll
on Florence’s city centre, the Edison bookstore in piazza della Repubblica
recently announced its closure.

While there has been no official
information about what will become of the Edison site, whether commercial or
cultural, it has been confirmed that in early 2013, Eataly, the high-end
Italian food shop, will open in the space once occupied by Libreria Martelli.

Originating in Piedmont, with
stores now in Tokyo and New York as well as numerous Italian cities, the Eataly
shop sells top-quality Italian ingredients and foods, and offers cooking
lessons and workshops on nutrition.

The impending closure of Edison
has prompted debate and even, on September 27, a flash mob organised by its 36
employees.

‘This is a historic bookstore
for Florence,’ said national secretary of Rifondazione Communist, Paolo
Ferrero, who was recently in town, ‘and Renzi must play his role as the mayor
and protect the work of the employees of this bookstore and the culture it
produces. Renzi is transforming the center of Florence into a kind of
Disneyland.’

Edison is holding a sale until
its scheduled closure in November 2012, with 30 percent off all books.
