According to
the December report, Pendolaria 2012, conducted by the Italian environmental
association Legambiente, the railway line connecting Viareggio to Florence is
among the 10 worst railway lines in Italy and the worst In Tuscany.
At the same
time, however, the report also confirms that Tuscany is among the few regions
in Italy that has continued to invest in regional transport despite widespread
national funding cuts. Tuscany invests some 50 million euro per year in the
regional railway system.
The Viareggio-Florence
line crosses four provinces and is one of the most frequented in the region,
transporting an average of 560 commuters per day. It is, however, marked by
chronic delays, with old trains often breaking down and causing service
interruptions along the single-track railway line.
To contain
costs and reduce delays, officials expect to close the following less-used
stations along the line: Serravalle, Borgo a Buggiano, Montecarlo, Porcari,
Tassignano, Nozzano and Massarosa. Fewer trains will also eventually travel the
route each day, officials report.
