Fiorentina’s season continued its rollercoaster path after the Viola signed off
a comfortable 2-0 win against Parma and a disappointing 2-0 defeat away to
archrivals Juventus. Resting in sixth spot in Serie A, Fiorentina have dropped
out of Champions League and Europa League qualification places, but the chance
of hosting European football next season is still an optimistic aim.
Fiorentina 2-0 Parma. At
their sixth attempt, the Viola finally secured their first win in 2013, beating
Parma 2-0 in a one-sided affair at Florence’s Franchi stadium. Fiorentina
poured forward in search of an early goal, and their efforts were rewarded
after 27 minutes, when Luca Toni’s towering header put them ahead. Five minutes
after halftime, Stevan Jovetic ended the visitors’ hopes of a comeback when he
scored an opportunistic goal inside the six-yard box.
Juventus 2-0 Fiorentina. Archrivals
and reigning champions Juventus inflicted a comprehensive defeat on the Viola
and extended their lead at the top of the Serie A table. Striker Mirko Vucinic
gave Juventus the lead, firing a rocket shot past Viola goalkeeper Emiliano
Viviano after 20 minutes. Alessandro Matri doubled the Bianconeri’s lead five minutes before halftime, bursting into
Fiorentina’s box to slot home a nice goal. In the second half, Juventus
exercised ‘cruise control,’ with the Viola rarely looking like an offensive
threat.
Next up. Fiorentina will next take on
Inter Milan at home on February 17 at 8:45pm, then play at Bologna on February
24 at 3pm.
