ACF Fiorentina were within minutes of qualifying for the Champions League until results elsewhere in Serie A conspired against them, leaving them with a place in the Europa League as a consolation. ACF Fiorentina won both of their last two games, capping their successful season with victories against Palermo and US Pescara, which places them fourth in the 2012/2013 Serie A standings.

Fiorentina 1 – 0 Palermo. Fiorentina’s last home game of the season was played under torrential rain, severely hindering the play of both teams but not dampening the spirits of Viola supporters. Both Fiorentina and Palermo boasted several goal-scoring opportunities in the early exchanges of the game, but it was the veteran striker Luca Toni who put the Viola ahead five minutes before halftime. The Florentines dominated play in the second half, and were always in control of the game’s outcome. Palermo’s defeat meant that they were relegated from Serie A.

US Pescara 1 – 5 Fiorentina. Fiorentina’s heroic efforts in Pescara were in vain on the night that saw AC Milan take the third place in Serie A under controversial circumstances. Adem Ljajić scored a brilliant hat trick, and Matías Fernández and Stevan Jovetić added gloss to the scoreline against the already relegated hosts. Pescara grabbed a consolation goal when they scored a late goal against an otherwise rampant Fiorentina. Unfortunately, in Siena, AC Milan scored two goals in the last 10 minutes of their game to deny Fiorentina their place among Europe’s elite next season.

This final disappointment is, however, proof of how far the Viola have come in one season: from finishing 13th last year, they have surpassed expectations to qualify for the Europa League.
