After a decade in the works, in the next two months Tuscan bread will receive protected designation of origin (PDO) status, at which time it will set off to conquer the world.
With an eye to the growing markets in the Far East, Tuscan bread may soon become one of the main local products to be exported overseas.
The idea emerged at Expo Rurale, an event recently held at Florence’s Fortezza da Basso showcasing agricultural products from all over Tuscany.
With a goal of promoting and raising awareness of Tuscan products in the Far East marketplace, the ‘bruschetta box’ for export will contain Tuscan bread PDO, Tuscan extra-virgin olive oil and salt from Volterra.
Tuscan bread is low in gluten and contains wheat germ, which is full of antioxidants, as agriculture councillor for Tuscany Gianni Salvadori highlighted in announcing this new venture, noting that Tuscan bread PDO ‘could soon help to improve the health of many citizens in the world’ thanks to its nutritional value. Salvadori went on to express his wish that Tuscan bread ‘become famous worldwide for its taste, for its health properties and for its role in Tuscan history.’
