The project Your History is Our History, organised by the Archivio Storico, Florence’s archives, is asking people to share their photos from the past, accompanied by a short blurb with any memories they would like to share with the public. The archive is calling for old photos of anything from weddings to holidays and moments from everyday life.
In just the few months since the call first went out, the project has already collected more than 2,000 photos. These and the other photos that are collected will be used in three upcoming exhibitions: The Bridges of Florence (2014) to mark the 70th anniversary of the city’s liberation; Firenze as the Capital (2015); and The Flood of 1966 (2016).
President of the cultural commission Leonardo Bieber, said, ‘Nowadays, pictures from the past, which many of us keep in shoe boxes at home, gathering dust, run the risk of never being shared with the current generation. Through this project, local memories become a collective memory, which, in turn, creates a more open society.’
Those with photos to share should bring them in person to Archivio Storico at via dell’Oriuolo 33 on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, by appointment only; call 055/2616527.
