Florence recently took part in Earth Hour 2014, switching off the lights at various city monuments. To allow residents and visitors to admire the sky in all its natural glory and to support action to address climate change, the city council turned off the lights for one hour at piazzale Michelangelo, the Palazzo Vecchio, Brunelleschi’s dome, the Ponte Vecchio, the church of San Miniato al Monte and, for the first time, the basilica of Santa Croce.
