Welcome international students of fall 2014!  On October 8, the Tuscan American Association (TAA) welcomes all study abroad students recently arrived in Florence. The event begins at 5pm and takes place in the grand Salone del 500 at the Palazzo Vecchio.

The annual reception will be even more special this year with guest U.S. Ambassador to Italy, John Phillips. Along with Ambassador Phillips, the mayor of Florence, Dario Nardella, and the co-presidents of the TAA, Andrea Davis and Federico Frediani, will address students during the evening.

As part of the occasion, the annual TAA awards will be presented. One of this year’s awards will go to the Polimoda Institute of Fashion Design and Marketing. The award is given, among other reasons, for Polimoda’s collaboration with American academic and fashion institutions and for providing excellent education in the fashion industry. As president of Polimoda, Mr. Ferruccio Ferragamo will accept the award on the Institute’s behalf.

Dr. Steven M. Altschuler, MD, CEO of The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia will also be awarded for his work in support of the Meyer Paediatric Hospital in Florence and his work to set up a formal protocol for collaboration between the two hospitals.

The evening will include a performance by the Florence Dance Company and a special award will be presented to the Florence Dance Festival, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary.

After the award ceremonies, refreshments will be served in the Sala d’Arme, where there will be stands featuring young artisans and Tuscan regional products, along with music, and several other surprises. Help the Children Florence, Observatory for Arts and Crafts, Let’s Work Artisans, Testadialkol and AACUPI’s Drinking on the Right Side will be among the organizations participating in the event. All are welcome.

The Florentine will also be at the Welcome Day—we look forward to meeting and chatting with you!
