150 years ago, on June 22, 1865, the National Museum of the Bargello was established in Florence.
To celebrate the anniversary, a series of events will take place over the next six months. The festivities will begin on May 14 with a free concert in honour of Dante by the Fiesole Music Schoolin the courtyard of the Bargello at 7pm.
During May and June, the Bargello will host five conferences held by specialists that will illustrate themes focused on the museum’s masterpieces and collections. The celebrations will end in the fall with an international conference on The Birth of the National Museums in Europe, organized in collaboration with Kunsthistorisches Institut di Firenze.
The Bargello first opened as Palazzo del Podestà and later became a prison for almost three centuries. Today, it is famous as being the home of a large number of masterpieces by Donatello, as well as works by Michelangelo, Verrocchio, Cellini, Giambologna and countless others.
