Summer is nearly here, and that means beach season. Not only are Italy’s beaches some of the most beautiful in the world, they are eco-friendly as well.

The country now has 281 beaches with Blue Flag certification. Awarded by the International Foundation for Environmental Education, Blue Flag designations are given to beaches that adhere to superior standards of cleanliness and sustainability. Re-evaluated every year, Blue Flag status is based on four categories: environmental education and information, water quality, environmental management, and safety and services. To gain the prestigious recognition, beaches must go the extra mile, displaying information and hosting activities on eco-friendliness and sustainability as well as implementing safety measures to safeguard beach goers. Achieving Blue Flag status not only demonstrates a commitment to the environment, but has also been linked to increased tourism rates for awarded beaches.

‘We are very proud of the results we are getting,’ said Michele De Lucia, mayor of Positano, whose beach earned Blue Flag certification this year. ‘It is well known that the Blue Flag is an award recognized both nationally and internationally. It’s an excellent calling card for our Comune.’
