With renovations expected both on the pitch and off, this summer could feature big changes for Fiorentina.

Like many other big European clubs, Fiorentina expect to have the normal comings and goings in personnel during the summer transfer period. They also continue to look into changes to their stadium.

Their current grounds, the Stadio Artemio Franchi, were built in 1931 and renovated before the 1990 World Cup in Italy. But, in recent years, structural and design concerns have loomed over the home of la Viola.

The current debate is whether to renovate the existing stadium or build a new one. Authorities supporting a new stadium have their eyes set on Swiss architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron. With an impressive resume already including Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena, the Beijing National Stadium, and the recently completed Nouveau Stade de Bordeaux, the hope is that the firm can bring a more modern feel to the birthplace of the Renaissance.

If renovations continue on the Artemio Franchi, the plan is to improve accessibility for the mobility impaired and to add more skyboxes, the first of which were added last summer. Overall, Fiorentina wishes to keep the stadium capacity over 40,000 in order to be able to bid for future European final matches.

This season, Fiorentina showed the capacity to compete on the field with the best of Europe’s elite. After another summer of work they may be able to contend both on the pitch and off.
