A literary sensation, Elena Ferrante is both mystery and obsession. While no one has ever seen the Italian writer of the so-called ‘Neapolitan series,’ raising doubts about her actual existence, her readers are everywhere. This is, in no small part, thanks to the careful translation by Ann Goldstein, editor at the New Yorker magazine. It’s also due to the frenzied attention of the media. The homepage of her website, www.elenaferrante.com, flashes one-liners in praise of her work from all the major news publications: newspaper, radio, websites and television. So when The Tuscan Times’ Cortona+Arezzo correspondent Oonagh Stransky, herself a writer and translator, suggested organizing an informal and fun book club to explore the series, we gladly backed the idea.

The first ever The Tuscan Times Book Club will be hosted at La Dogana wine bar, in Valiano di Montepulciano, from 5 to 7pm on September 19. A great location for those living in the Cortona and Montepulciano countryside! It will be repeated every third Saturday of the month.

Also beginning September 24, from 5.30 to 7.30pm, Caffe Tuscher in central Cortona will be the scene of The Tuscan Times book club, to be repeated every 4th Thursday of the month.

Arezzo residents can also join in the book fun. Starting September 22, head to the splendid Casa Museo Ivan Bruschi (corso Italia, 14) on the fourth Tuesday every month from 6 to 8 pm.
