The goal is clear: build the world’s largest cake in four days.

If their attempt is successful, the creation by more than 300 Italian cake designers and sugar artists—an enormous cake in the shape of Italy, complete with islands, mountain ranges and monuments—will go into the record books as weighing more than 2,000 pounds and serving 12,000.

The world-record attempt, which will take place from October 1 to 4 at the Hobby Show Milano, at Fiera Milano Rho convention center, is sponsored by the National Association of Cake Designers Italy (ANCDI) and Cake & Cake, an Italian cake-decorating company. ANCDI president Surelis Vazquez said the world-record attempt is also an effort to raise awareness about cake decorating as a profession, noting that what was once a hobby is now an industry: ‘In fact,’ said Vazquez, ‘we’ve managed to get “cake designer” put on the list of “professions … with the ministry of economic development.’ The event will be witnessed by Guinness World Records judge Lorenzo Veltri, known for his participation in Show of Records, hosted by Italian TV personality Gerry Scotti. Portions of the cake will be distributed free to the trade fair’s attendees.
