Now in its 13th year, the annual photography showcase Seravezza Fotografia returns to Seravezza (Lucca) this week.

Franco Fontana was among the first Italian photographers to make colour, not representation, a principal element.

Franco Fontana was one of the first Italian photographers to make colour, not representation, a principal element.

Running from February 6 to May 1, the festival includes a series of individual and group shows workshops and portfolio reviews, as well as a major exhibition, Full Colour: Polaroids and Architectural Abstractions, focused on the prolific Modena-born Franco Fontana’s five-decade career.

The title of the exhibition refers to Fontana’s breakout technique: he was among the first Italian photographers to make colour, not representation, a principal element. As curator Denis Curti commented, though ‘landscape may seem to be the focus of his work, colour is the true subject of Fontana’s photography. Colour transforms the landscape, humanizes and brings it to life. It’s through his choice of colour combinations that Fontana gives meaning and vitality to his photography.’

Open from February 6 to April 10 at the Palazzo Mediceo (viale Leonetto Amadei, 358), Full Colour is open Thursday–Saturday, 3–7pm; Sunday and holidays 10am–7pm. Tickets are 6 euro (4 reduced).

Shows scheduled for the nearby Scuderie Granducali (viale Leonetto Amedei, 230) include the India-themed Privilege of Life, works by Giacomo Donati (February 7–21); The Poetical Illusion of Some Natural Anomalies, works by Jeannie Albert (March 19–April 25; and a group show of works by some of Fontana’s students (March 24–April 10).
