Hidden between the Buontalenti fountain and the bustling streets by Palazzo Pitti lies a little-known piazza where most tourists rarely trek. Every year, the always-charming piazza della Passera closes out the summer with a free series of open-air poetry readings, live music and performance art, Settembre in Piazza della Passera. The whole neighborhood gets involved in the nightly festivities, from Sdrucciolo de’ Pitti to via dello Sprone. At press time, the program for this year is still being defined: follow The Florentine’s website and social media channels for updates, along with the Facebook page “Piazza della Passera”.

Anfiteatro delle Cascine, viale Aeronautica, Cascine Park, Florence

Sonic Youth- and Liz Phair-endorsed songwriter Cat Power will bring her blend of bluesy punk-folk and soul to Florence in this standout Estate Fiorentina event. Emerging in the early ‘90s as a guitarist on the Atlanta scene, she’s built a successful solo career with songs and stylings frequently drawn from her Southern upbringing. Her live style is spontaneous and unrefined, so fans can expect a rather intimate performance, despite the size of the venue. Tickets start at 25 euro and are available via Boxol and TicketOne. For additional information, visit Le Nozze di Figaro’s website.

TRADITION/Rificolona
September 7, 8.15pm
Starting point: piazza Santa Felicita

rificolona

Honoring the birth of the Virgin Mary, the Rificolona Festival is one of Florence’s most beloved folklore processions, moving from Santa Felicita to Santissima Annunziata. The event probably mimics 17th-century farmers’ September journeys to Santissima Annunziata, where they would pay tribute to the Madonna. Contemporary Florence’s families parade through the streets with colorful paper lanterns, creating a spectacle that puts the famous Tangled scene to shame. Lacking lantern supplies or ideas? Get crafty at select Oltrarno shops between 4 and 6pm on Monday (Spazio Creativo, via Romana 111r, Cartoleria La Scartoffia, piazza Santo Spirito 14r; Cartoleria Lory, piazza de’ Frescobaldi 4r; and Giocattoli Bada Bada, via Pisana 23r) or at the Mercato Centrale’s free creativity workshop for kids  ages 7 to 11 (reserve a spot for 4, 5 or 6pm by emailing eventi@mercatocentrale.it). Take part in a pre-parade party in piazza del Carmine from 7pm, and then head to Santa Felicita to prepare for the procession.

GIVE/Acenapermatrice
September 6, 8pm
Osteria il Magazzino, piazza della Passera, Florence

In the wake of the devastating earthquakes and aftershocks that struck central Italy, the community is coming together to lend a helping hand. The #AMAtriciana initiative is one of the tastiest ways to give back: Amatrice, birthplace of the classic pasta dish amatriciana, was the hardest-hit city, and various groups and restaurants are organizing amatriciana dinners with proceeds donated to relief efforts. Head to Osteria Il Magazzino in piazza della Passera for a homemade dinner paired with wines from Fattoria di Montefiridolfi. Cost is 30 euro, with 10 euro per order going directly to relief funds. Dopocena, enjoy the first signs of Settembre in Piazza della Passera festivities. Reservations are required by September 5; limited spots are available. Call 055/215969 to reserve your spot or write to lorenzofanti@asaplimited.com or info@travelitalianstyle.com for further information.
