Three hundred red umbrellas are bringing joy to Pontassieve town centre this autumn and winter.

The installation, titled Under an Umbrella Sky, was designed by architect Marco Merlini as longer lasting Christmas decorations along the main shopping street in the town located 30 minutes to the east of Florence. Each umbrella is equipped with an LED bulb to guide locals and visitors along the old street.

Marco Merlini: “The umbrella installation aims to turn a new spotlight on one of the lesser-known towns near Florence, a street that winds its way for 35 metres from the clock tower to the Medici bridge, a path now highlighted by a river of colour.”

The installation was inaugurated on September 29 at a charity dinner on the town’s patron saint’s day, San Michele, and will continue until January 6, 2017.
