The Nutcracker is as classical as classical ballet can get—and it’s the perfect family treat this holiday season.
Following last year’s sell-out success, the Ballet of Moscow will be returning to Florence’s beautiful La Pergola theatre on December 23 to perform Tchaikovsky’s much-loved ballet. The accomplished ballerinas, dazzling sets and impressive costumes are bound to entertain children and adults alike ahead of the Christmas season.
The plot, in a nutshell: it’s Christmas Eve and a party is underway. A friend of the family arrives bearing gifts for the children. Clara, the favourite, is given a Nutcracker, but her brother Fritz breaks it out of spite. Clara, tired from the festivities, falls asleep and starts to dream. A battalion of mice try to steal the Nutcracker, which becomes alive. To save the Nutcracker Clara throws a slipper at the King of the Mice. And so, the Nutcracker turns into a prince and Clara follows him into a snowy forest. Act Two begins as Clara and the prince enter the Kingdom of the Sweets and all its waltzes. The ballet comes to a climax as the Prince and the Sugar Plum Fairy perform an exquisite pas de deux and a waltz. Clara wakes up, thinking back to her dream and hugging her Nutcracker.
