“Christmas is coming and the goose is getting fat,” but it doesn’t mean that we humans have to follow suit. While it might be tempting to curl up on the sofa and become addicted to that new series on Netflix, your body will thank you for some exercise. Here’s the good news: it doesn’t have to be boring as Florence boasts an array of fun winter fitness options to choose from.

Sambafit

Shimmy your way through the winter with Sambafit, a new fitness class that blends Brazilian samba with a high-octane cardio workout. Upbeat, entertaining and calorie consuming, Sambafit is great for first timers and all those looking for something new on the fitness front. Led by instructor Martina Niccolai at Klab, the music will warm up you as a South American fiesta hits the city this winter. Non-members are also welcome, but you have to book your spot in advance. 15 euro non-members, 8 euro members.

When life brings you down, tie all security blankets to the ceiling and leave to unravel with aerial fitness. A subgenre of modern dance, this unusual “suspended” exercise gives you the chance to explore space in 3D, while learning to balance, strengthen and innovate your movement vocab—who knows, your new-found choreographic skills might encourage you to run off and join Cinque du Soleil! Available at Garage Performance Studio (first lesson free) and Palestra San Niccolò.

Ice Stock

Take to the ice this winter for a game of ice stock, a cross between curling and bowling. At Firenze Winter Park, teams of two, four or eight take turns in aiming for a target known as the Daube. Those who come closest, win. The ice stock courts are open from 8pm to midnight from Monday to Sunday, but you need to book. Cost: 35 euro per court per hour. Those looking for a more classical approach to winter sports can opt for ice skating (skate hire 2 euro, entrance 6 euro Monday to Friday, 8 euro at weekends) or skiing instead. Firenze Winter Park is open until February 26, 2017.
