In the aftermath of the October 26 and 30 earthquakes that devastated Norcia and surrounding areas, Siena’s cathedral crypt and Santa Maria della Scala complex are hosting “La Bellezza Ferita. Norcia Earthheartartquake”. The exhibition aims to protect Norcia’s surviving artworks from potential damage in the coming year and to chronicle the damage sustained by the area. A portion of admission proceeds will be donated to earthquake survivors and various recovery efforts.

Partially damaged or almost ruined artworks will be displayed alongside a series of videos, photographs and firsthand accounts of the earthquakes provided by the fire brigade and local photographers. The aim of this juxtaposition is to raise awareness of the gravity of the event and to spark conversation about how to best recover, restore and protect the artworks featured—as well as all of the treasures found in Norcia—from future seismic threats. Many of the works on display were damaged even in deposits and are on display to the public for the first time in years. The exhibition is open during regular hours for each of the monuments involved and will run until October 29, 2017.
