In the lead up to the Lucca Film Festival, launching on April 2, Viareggio’s Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art will host an affiliated exhibition, Il Viaggio di Mastorna. The Dream of a Film Brought to Life.
Legendary Italian filmmaker Federico Fellini worked on Il Viaggio di Mastorna beginning in the early 1960s, drafting a script, designing set and costume ideas, and even auditioning actors. He continued to brainstorm throughout his prolific career, but the project never came to fruition. Many of his completed works, however, were influenced by the plans he had underway for this now-mythical movie. The exhibition, put on in collaboration with Rome’s Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia, reconstructs Fellini’s storyboards, as well as drafts, interviews and assorted memorabilia. Guided by set designer and professor Francesco Frigeri, students at the center analyzed Fellini’s notes, using computer graphics to bring sketches of costumes to life, as well as to convey, in 3D, the specific scenes that the director had envisioned. These contemporary interpretations are complemented by video footage of Fellini and of Marcello Mastroianni’s audition for the film.
