CRAFTS/Artigianato e Palazzo
May 18-21
Giardino Corsini, via della Scala 115, Florence

Set in the lush Corsini Gardens—rarely open to the public—the artisan showcase and marketplace Artigianato e Palazzo is a springtime fixture on the local calendar, bringing together around 80 exhibitors. The 2017 theme is “Fiori d’Arancio” and this edition will have a special wedding focus. Workshops, live demonstrations and conferences will all be part of the program. Don’t miss the “Ricette di Famiglia” talks, a major hit in past years: in keeping with the theme, chefs from Desinare at Riccardo Barthel will recreate dishes served at speakers’ weddings. For the full program, see the website.

GEMS/Preziosa: Florence Jewellery Week
May 24-28
Various venues in Florence

Danni Schwaag, Mother of pearl, rings, 2011

The city cheers on fine jewellery craftsmanship with the new edition of Preziosa: Florence Jewellery Week, put on by Le Arti Orafe Jewllery School in partnership with the Museo Bellini and various Oltrarno galleries and venues. Goldsmiths, designers and academic instructors will team up to host lectures (held in both Italian and English), workshops and exhibitions. Despite our city’s long history as an artisan capital, the event is not focused solely on Florence: among the many international events is the exhibition Jwahr: New Iranian and Persian Jewellery (Museo Bellini). For more information, see Le Arti Orafe’s website.

BLOCK PARTY/ Sdrucciolo in Festa + La Maggiolata
May 20, from 2pm (via Maggio) + 3pm (lo Sdrucciolo)
Sdrucciolo de’ Pitti and via Maggio, Florence

Giulia Materia, shop on Sdrucciolo dei Pitti | Ph. Michelle Davis

If there were ever a downward slope to be on, Sdrucciolo de’ Pitti would be it. The tiny but panache-packed strip between piazzas Pitti and Santo Spirito is hosting a street party on May 20, with participation from area shops and mini-celebrities. Get down to a DJ set by Letizia & Stefano, watch a fashion show, catch a live acoustic performance by Lorenzo Niccolini and much more; at the last edition, the fun concluded well after midnight. The event is part of the larger La Maggiolata, a festival put on by Associazione Via Maggio celebrating Florentine May. For program updates, follow area boutique Giulia Materia’s Facebook page.

OPEN DAY/ Gardens Galore
May 21
Various gardens and courtyards in Tuscany

April showers have (finally) brought May flowers and sunshine. Celebrate Tuscan spring this Sunday with a jaunt through some of the region’s most gorgeous gardens, most of which are normally closed to the public. The Associazione Dimore Storiche Italiane‘s Tuscan chapter will host an open day on May 21, spotlighting lush gardens, courtyards and historic homes of Florence, Lucca, Pisa, Siena and beyond. Close-to-home highlights include the Giardino Torrigiani (via dei Serragli 146), Giardino Corsi Annalena (via Romana 38) and the Palazzo Pandolfini garden (via San Gallo 74). For the full list, click here. Entrance to all venues is free.

ELECTRONIC/Oren Ambarchi for 30 years of Tempo Reale
May 20, 9.30pm
Limonaia of Villa Strozzi, via Pisana 77, Florence

Florence’s electronic music centre Tempo Reale is celebrating three decades of boundary-pushing with a series of concerts in the Limonaia of Villa Strozzi. Kicking off the party is Australian crossover musician Oren Ambarchi (pictured), a multi-instrumentalist and Pitchfork darling who’s collaborated with some of the biggest names on the experimental scene, particularly on his latest album Hubris (2016). The show takes place in collaboration with ongoing interdisciplinary arts festival Fabbrica Europa and tickets are 10 euro. For additional information and the full schedule of 30th anniversary shows, see Tempo Reale’s website or call 055717270.
