Traces. Artful dialogues at Palazzo Pitti’s Museum of Fashion and Costume is not your usual winter fashion-forward exhibition; it furnishes a new take on a centuries-old exhibition space.
Curated by Caterina Chiarelli, Simonella Condemi and Tommaso Lagattolla, the show places 107 exhibits under public gaze, featuring paintings and sculptures from the Renaissance mansion alongside couturier creations dating from the 1930s to the here and now. Mirrors play a key role in reflecting and expanding the decadent spaces, repeating the lines and hues of the clothing as well as amplifying the ambient light. No chronological order is implemented in this exhibition; instead the invitation is to linger on the interaction between fashion as art and art as fashion.
In addition to the revised setup, the new clothing and textile deposits belonging to the Museum of Fashion and Costume were revealed to the press in the new wing next to the original deposits of the Palazzo Pitti.
At the press conference, Andrea Cavicchi, president of the Florence Centre for Italian Fashion and Pitti Immagine Discovery Foundation commented, “The occasion of the presentation of the new deposit for storing the fashion collections is a key step in the collaboration between CFMI, Pitti Immagine and Fondazione Pitti Discovery, with the Uffizi Galleries. In these last two years of work together, in addition to Karl Lagerfeld’s monographic exhibition and the Epheremal Museum of Fashion exhibition by Olivier Saillard, we have worked to create permanent housing in which to store and promote contemporary fashion.”
