If the sun-kissed stones of Villa Medicea Di Lilliano Wine Estate could tell a story, it would be one of ambition, royalty and change.

The History

The villa began life as a lookout tower in the 11th century, garnering strategic importance in the 15th century under the ownership of the Gianelli family, followed by the Guiducci and Capponi families. In 1646, the property was purchased from the Medici Grand Duke Ferdinando II, becoming part of the Royal Villa of Lappeggi as a humble farmhouse known as the Palazzo della Fattoria. In 1667, the Grand Duke of Tuscany Cosimo III assigned the villa to his brother Cardinal Francesco Maria of Medici, who made his mark through restructuring and expansion, leading to the main villa’s current design. The simple external façade belies the beauty that lies within, including a stunning fountain with statues designed by Giovanni Battista Foggini, the twin of the more famous water feature in Florence’s Boboli Gardens. The villa, transformed into a noble country home in every way, entertained renowned guests including the King of Denmark Frederick IV in 1709. To celebrate the King’s visit, a sumptuous party was held in the grounds centred on the centuries-old terrace with mesmerizing views of Brunelleschi’s Dome in the distance.

The Present

Owned by the Malenchini family since 1830, Villa Medicea di Lilliano Wine Estate blends the charm of an historic home with the finest modern comforts. The beautiful backdrop is perfect for an Italian vacation and physically distanced events. Strolling in the footsteps of the Medici family, relaxing in a renovated apartment and sipping the authentic estate wine, the past inspires the future in this unforgettable setting.
