Routine checks are underway at Florence Cathedral to ensure the safety of the thirteenth-century monuments.

Starting with Giotto’s bell tower, the method will extend to the external surfaces of the Duomo, Brunelleschi’s dome and the Baptistery. Visual checks are carried out by the staff of Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore, the cathedral’s administrative and governing body, using a crane vaunting a 103-metre-long arm.

The monitoring is expected to take three weeks.
