This year, Thursday June 6 signals the start of summer as numerous institutions, bars, outdoor spaces and galleries are having opening or inauguration parties. Tuscany’s biggest contemporary art institutions are holding rival serate to welcome in the summer season. Palazzo Strozzi’s Strozzi Night is dedicated to a young crowd and will include DJ sets, performances and interactive games from Brasilian relational art collective Opavivará! and an aperitivo from Strozzi Caffé, all accompanied by a reduced-price ticket for under 35s to exhibition Verrocchio, il maestro di Leonardo.
“Night Fever. Designing Club Culture 1960 – Today.”
20km away in Prato, Luigi Pecci Centre for Contemporary Art opens their summer exhibition, Night Fever. Designing Club Culture 1960 – Today, produced by the Vitra Design Museum and ADAM – Brussels Design Museum, that examines the artistic, architectural and design choices of twentieth century night club culture. The evening, from 6pm onwards, involves free entry to the exhibition and a 10pm DJ set from C2C Soundsystem, a selection by Club To Club, the famous festival of avant-pop and electronic music founded in 2002 in Turin which has become a point of reference in the international panorama of avant-garde music.
Fooo’ Orto at The Student Hotel
The Student Hotel is hosting an exotic, carnivalesque evening to inaugurate the summer’s hottest foody spot, Fooo L’Orto. An urban garden, designed by Concept Space OOO – FOOO Florence Out Of Ordinary, in collaboration with The Student Hotel, hopes to accompany your summer with gourmet food, delicious cocktails, great music and a full calendar of events. On opening night expect circus performances from Circo Nero Italia and a “jungle” dress code.

Villa Bardini hosts the second edition of this literary festival that includes literary city tours, special readings, talks and discussions from an array of Italian authors as well as activities for children, like the Caccia alla storia! treasure hunt that helps kids get to know the stories of Calvino and Dimmi quello che non so, a reading with a live drawing installation for 8 year olds to adults. Saturday evening consists of readings on the terrace at sunset, with recitals from various well-known and up and coming Italian novels. A roundtable event on Sunday afternoon at the Limonaia discusses female writers in the Italian literary scene and a reading from author, Fabio Canino, from his novel Le parole che mancano al cuore;a touching tale about a Serie A footballer battling with his homosexuality. Yoon-Young Hur exploring classical Korean shapes through the local material / terracotta from Impruneta, Florence
Contemporary art hub, co-working space and renovated Renaissance palazzo Numeroventi welcomes numerous new artists in residence like ceramicist Yoon-Young Hur, designer Malgorzata Bany and sculptor Lorenzo Brinati. The palazzo will take on an open-studio format and host an exhibition of these and many more artist’s work from 6pm – 8pm on June 10. The occasion also serves the purpose of celebrating the opening of the new Numeroventi shop and gallery, which will be open, alongside the exhibition, until June 15. Marco Paoli brings his moving and impactful photographs to the Museo degli Innocenti in this exhibition that celebrates the raw and overlooked industrial and natural beauty of Tuscany. His works propel the contradictions and nuances of arguably one of the most photographed places on the planet into the public conscience. The photographs are accompanied by poetry from Alba Donati who gives voice to the visual surface of the photographs. The photos, notably absent of any kind of human presence, nevertheless succeed in communicating the human effect on various landscapes and buildings of Tuscany; Villa Corsini in San Casciano, Villa Mansi in Lucca and la Fonte delle Fate in Poggibonsi are just some of the locations included.

FOOD + WINE/Caruso Wine & Food Summer Festival

Third edition of the Caruso Wine & Food Summer Festival welcomes more than forty food and wine businesses from Florence, the Municipality of Lastra and the rest of Tuscany. On both days of the festival there’ll be tastings and opportunities to purchase products and fresh produce. Specialities to try include: Pe’I’ Canto’s famous fritto of vegetables, coccoli and chicken, Tuscany Brothers “Street Farm Lab”’s lampredotto, trippa, porchetta and pappa al pomodoro, as well as Osteria Armanda’s pici and tortelli and Stickhouse’s artisanal ice cream sticks. There’ll be a dedicated chefs’ area where cooking shows will take place as well as cultural and literary presentations and discussions that touch on various topics from the Oenogastronomical world. From 6pm, DJ Leo Daddi will provide the soundtrack to a relaxing aperitivo in the villa’s garden.
