A bolt of lightning struck the Palazzo Vecchio around 1pm on July 7.

Checks are still underway, but the damage appeared to have been limited to the electrical system and video surveillance due to the presence of a copper storm cage. Installed in 2015 and costing 300,000 euro, the storm protection covers the whole of the building.

The Torre di Arnolfo is closed to visitors for the time being, although the wall-walk remains open.
This is the first time that lightning has struck the Palazzo Vecchio since the installation of the storm protection.
