Beginning October 1, residents of Florence can purchase a museum pass for the city’s civic museums for 10 euro, guaranteeing unlimited entrance and three guided tours for one year. The aim is to encourage locals to learn about their immense artistic heritage and spread the word about the extraordinary collections housed in the civic museums.
The pass includes entrance to Palazzo Vecchio (including the archeological site, Torre di Arnolfo and tapestries in the Salone de’ Dugento), Santa Maria Novella Museum, Museo Novecento, Stefano Bardini Museum, Brancacci Chapel, Fondazione Salvatore Romano, Forte di Belvedere and the city’s historic towers and gates (Torre San Niccolò, Torre della Zecca, Porta Romana and Baluardo San Giorgio). Visits to the Auschwitz Memorial, “Gino Bartali” Cycling Museum and Museo del Bigallo will still be free.
The initiative is experimental for now, but Councilor for Culture Tommaso Sacchi believes in the message. “It is fundamental that Florentines have a ‘special’ ticket for ‘their’ museums,” he noted. The card’s affordable price is deliberate, says Sacchi, as it increases the chance of repeat visits and attracting people who would otherwise not come to the museums. Though entrance is free, some sites require advance reservations, as do the guided tours. The card is available to residents of Florence and the municipalities within the Città Metropolitana. It can be purchased at the ticket offices inside Palazzo Vecchio, Museo Novecento and Brancacci Chapel, and can be only bought by the card holder. An ID and proof of residence is required. The card can also be purchased online, and can be picked up at one of the aforementioned museums, upon demonstrating proof of purchase, an ID and proof of residence.
