Every December, as part of the artistic Flight Firenze festival, Florence gains improved permanent lighting at a given place in the city from public amenities company Silfi.

Piazza Indipendenza is the recipient of this year’s upgrade, shining new light on the bronze statues of former mayors of Florence and prime ministers of Italy, Bettino Ricasoli and Ubaldino Peruzzi. Lighting has recently been overhauled in the entire piazza with the installation of LED technology in the historic lampposts. The move is expected to reduce energy usage by approximately forty per cent and improve lighting and public safety in the square not far from the Santa Maria Novella railway station.

Improvements in previous years have seen upgraded lighting for the Sant’Ambrogio market and church, the Loggia del Pesce, and the Basilica of Santa Croce.
