Tuscany became a “yellow zone” on Monday, January 10 due to the high number of Covid patients now in hospitals across the region (18% capacity on ordinary wards and 17% of ICU beds). The colour change does not bring additional restrictions other than urging greater caution among residents.

Winter rules across Italy currently dictate that masks must be worn outdoors and that FFP2 face protection must be worn in cinemas, theatres, stadiums and on public transport. All outdoor events are prohibited and nightclubs are closed. All other businesses may remain open.

Italy has now made Covid-19 vaccination mandatory for the over-50s. Failure to vaccinate will result in a one-off fine of 100 euro starting on February 1, which will be applied by the inland revenue department, Agenzia delle Entrate, by cross-checking people’s personal details with vaccination records. Italy is also tightened its workplace rules. From February 15, all workers aged over 50 will be obliged to show evidence of recovery from Covid-19 in the last six months or vaccination. All over-50s who access the workplace without the “Super Green Pass” may be liable to pay a fine ranging between 600 and 1,500 euro. Effective January 20, a negative test, vaccination or recovery will be required to access hairdressers, post offices, banks and shops; supermarkets and grocery stores are exempt. Fines between 400 and 1,000 euro may apply for breach of rules. These latest restrictions follow the tightening of measures introduced the week before, which meant that persons without proof of vaccination or recovery could no longer eat inside or outside at restaurants, go to the gym or use public transportation.

Prices have now been capped on testing in Tuscany: the cost of a rapid antigen test must not exceed 15 euro and PCR 80 euro. Here’s a round-up of places where you can get a Covid-19 test for international travel.
