Klab Conti has long been a leading light on Florence’s fitness scene, but now the heritage-soaked hub has upped its game with reassuring safety measures and an all-new aeration system.

Main gym floor with safe spacing between machines at central Florence fitness centre Klab Conti

A hop, skip and jump from the Duomo, the manager of Klab Conti is complimenting his clients on their lunges and run times. “I remember everyone’s names, so that they feel special and welcome here. We want Klab to feel like a sports club with the very best customer service, to give people a feeling of belonging whether they’re working out, unwinding in the spa or having a drink at the bar.” The professionalism comes across the moment you step off the Florentine pietra serena backstreet into the chic entrance shared with the adjacent five-star sister hotel, Firenze Number Nine.

A grey-arched corridor leads to a lounge-like space splashed with parrot and palm frescoes that provide inspirational surroundings for your gym time. Natural light pervades throughout the central loft as instructors interact naturally with Klab members, giving invaluable tips on recovery times and useful corrective actions. A maximum capacity of 46 people on the main gym floor is backed up by the fact that the latest-generation Artis Technogym machines are spaced at least two metres apart and cleaned after use. Escape from the psychological strain of these times also comes by logging into the machine, accessing the Wi-Fi for streaming services and keeping your mind in shape (or, where needed, taking a call or two while training during the day). An open flight of steps twirls up to the mirrored fitness studio, where small groups enthusiastically take on aerobics courses, muscle tone sessions as well as functional training and holistic courses like yoga and Pilates. Word has it that a current favourite up on the top floor at Klab Conti is Technogym Bench, an all-inclusive functional training kit that guarantees a total body workout. A stretching room soothes pre- or post-workout muscle groups, while the weights area is equipped with everything you need to build core strength while staying a safe distance away from fellow lifters.

Set in a stunning fifteenth-century palazzo once owned by the Strozzi family, you can especially feel the sense of history at Klab Conti beneath the impressively preserved brick vaults in the spa. Spa access is currently limited to just seven people at any one time, elevating an exclusive experience to sublime status in the heritage-soaked sauna, hammam and whirlpool. Recent restorations revealed a well dating to the 1400s that has been conservatively converted into a relaxing colour therapy shower.

The pride and joy of Klab Conti comes in the form of an all-new air treatment system that other fitness centres are bound to envy. Positioned a few centimetres from the training spaces on the gym floor and in the fitness studio, any viral matter or bacteria is immediately extracted from the air indoors at the right power level through microhole tubes into an outdoor kill-zone. It’s an additional guarantee of safety for the long-standing clients and newcomers to this paladin of fitness in central Florence.
