Bi-curious, bisexual and heteroflexible women have a new home in Florence as the international Skirt Club comes to the city.

Founded in London in 2014 by marketing expert Geneviève LeJeune, the inaugural members-only meet-up in Florence takes place on May 28. As glamorous as it is safe, the club will take up residence at world-renowned cocktail bar and restaurant Locale in via delle Seggiole, with Saturday’s event taking a “black and gold” dress code, starting at 10pm.

Skirt Club can be found all over the globe, from New York to Berlin, Sydney to Los Angeles; as their website declares, “The power of a woman is universal”. There are two simple rules: no men and no photography, with female empowerment at the centre of the consensual serata

Three types of events make up Skirt Club’s model, with Florence set to see a cocktail soiree with entertainment by famous Shibari artist Marie Sauvage (“an erotic, aesthetic practice that transforms and sculpts the contours of the body with rope”, in Sauvage’s words), while the evening’s speaker will be LeJeune herself.

Geneviève tells us, “We chose Italy as a whole; it was a question of where to begin. We will be hosting events in Milan and Rome as well. The reason we’ve gone with Florence first is simply because of our connections; there are people here who support us. With a topic like sexuality, it’s private, so it’s important to have friends on the ground who will help spread the word in the right way. Through word of mouth, we have grown our community since its beginning eight years ago and so that’s the best method for us.”

The mother, wife and businesswoman created private parties in Shoreditch, London, having not found similar spaces that celebrated bisexuality for women in a safe setting. Now with over 18,000 members globally and present in many countries all over the world, Geneviève explains, “Our purpose is to curate spaces where women feel free to express and exist as their true authentic selves, without judgement. We don’t allow non-members to attend for privacy reasons and also for safety; it’s important for us to know who our members are. It’s one thing I’ve learned over many years of hosting these events, that helping a woman feel comfortable and safe in her environment is the key to her letting go, enjoying herself and who she truly is. A lot of traditional values don’t work for women. We don’t get to have our fun. It’s always been ‘his’ agenda and ‘she’ has always supported that. Skirt Club is a gift for women: it’s to put their own happiness first.”
