Although AILO was conceived in 1974 as an extension of the Ladies’ Guild of St. James American Church, it was officially transformed into the American League of Florence in 1975. Soon thereafter it became the American International League of Florence, welcoming like-minded, English-speaking women from all over the world.

Initially, the intent was to welcome newcomers and help them to integrate into the Florentine community. Social and cultural activities were also encouraged as well as children’s activities, such as play dates and picnics. The members quickly became interested in contributing to community wellbeing through social assistance programmes and charity fundraising.

The first Christmas Bazaar organized by AILO was in 1975 and a Christmas Bazaar has taken place every year since, apart from during the Covid pandemic in 2020 when gathering under the same roof was prohibited. Although the league was unable to raise money for charity from the bazaar, AILO decided to make a sizeable contribution to three chosen charities, which had suffered greatly from the lockdown: Artemisia Centro Antiviolenza (domestic abuse became even more dangerous during lockdown); ITACA (young people with mental illnesses were severely challenged when cut off from their support groups); and Angeli della Città (helping the needy in times of uncertainty).

AILO has always tried to be there when help is needed and the community service team have brought many a smile to people’s faces in difficult situations, whether in retirement homes or specific centres for the mentally disabled or children in need. The spirit of giving is alive and well among the members, something that is symbolized by the Christmas Bazaar as people come together to work for others, recognising a steadfast duty towards the Florentine charities that do such great work to improve the lives of many.

This year’s Christmas Bazaar will take place at the Tepidarium (via Bolognese 17A) on December 6 (2-6pm), 7 (10am-6pm) and 8 (10am-6pm). Expect preloved and vintage clothes, bric-a-brac, secondhand books and lots of Christmas decorations!
