Five people lost their lives in an explosion at an Eni fuel depot in Calenzano, near Florence.

Residents in the nearby area were affected by the shockwave, which shattered glass in the vicinity as Italy’s emergency alert system was put to use for the first time nationwide. Local authorities asked people within a five-mile radius of the blast to remain indoors as a black plume of smoke filled the sky. The incident also impacted access to the main A1 motorway and train travel was halted locally.

“Eni would like to convey its closeness to the families of the deceased and the persons involved in the incident,” reads the Italian news section of Eni’s website. “Eni is collaborating fully with the judicial authorities to ascertain the dynamics and causes of the explosion of one of the tanker trucks at the loading platforms.”

The fire has now been fully extinguished.
