On March 14 and 15, parts of Tuscany were affected by flooding after a month’s rain fell in just one day. Florence was largely unaffected, compared to the surrounding towns of Sesto Fiorentino and Rufina, which were among the worst hit, as well as a section of the highway between Florence and Livorno, which has since reopened.

A state of emergency has been announced by the president of the Tuscany Region, Eugenio Giani, as Tuscans clear out their homes and businesses with the help of Italy’s civil protection organizations and volunteer associations.

Grati Winery needs volunteers to help clear 10 hectares of vineyards, which have been wrecked when the River Sieve burst its banks between Pontassieve and Rufina. The vines are part of the picturesque local scenery in the Chianti Rufina area. Volunteers can park at the former Casellina restaurant along via Colognolese and walk down through the vineyards towards the river from 8am daily. You’ll need wellington boots, gloves and chainsaws, if you have them. Call Cristiana 338 7006571, Carlotta 392 0823007 or Costanza 338 1264943 for more information.  The winery also has a fundraising campaign here.
