There is only one week left to comply with the new regulations regarding free parking in Controlled Parking Zones (ZCS) for Florence residents (until May 30).

Starting on Thursday, May 1, simply displaying the vehicle registration document on your dashboard will no longer be sufficient to demonstrate your right to free parking. To avoid fines, it will become mandatory to register your vehicle licence plate on the website by May 30 at the latest.

As from May 1, inspections will be automated. Databases will communicate with each other and fines will be issued automatically. The local road authority SAS – Servizi alla Strada will deploy vehicles equipped with licence plate readers that can detect violations in real time. The municipal police will also have the Cerbero device in patrol cars, allowing them to check if a plate is registered in the system within seconds. Digital checks will be backed up by manual checks carried out by traffic wardens and municipal officers.

Drivers will need to activate a subscription to park in any of the other four ZCS areas in the city. The new plans, already in effect since the start of the year, replace the old windshield sticker. They cost 10 euro per month (reduced to 5 euro per month for families with an ISEE—income indicator—below 12,500 euro) or 100 euro for an annual subscription.

Florence residents with electric vehicles can continue to park for free in mixed-use blue spaces. Non-residents with electric vehicles are entitled to a 50 per cent discount on parking fees. Hybrid vehicles are not eligible for any discounts. Pregnant women and new parents residing in Florence can receive a single permit per licence plate, valid for all ZCS areas in the city. This benefit is no longer available to residents of the greater metropolitan area.

As things currently stand, it appears that two-thirds of residents have yet to complete the registration.
