State Archive of Florence

The State Archive of Florence contains documents produced by the regional registry office between 1808 and 1865. The archive includes extracts sent by parish priests, registers and directories as well as numerous accompanying documents essential for drafting civil status records. It also contains statistical reports and the population census. The following frequently consulted series of the Tuscany Civil Status are available on replacement microfilm: indexes of records by community for 1808–14; alphabetical decennial indexes for 1808–37; and general alphabetical indexes for 1818–65. The following are available on microfilm or online on the Antenati Portal: birth record registrations for 1808–65 and marriage and death record registrations for 1808–38. The archive also include military draft records across Tuscany, starting from 1842.

Online genealogical sources include the Ceramelli Papiani Collection. Assembled over many years by Enrico Ceramelli Papiani (1896–1976), the collection is preserved at the Florence State Archive and consists of almost 8,000 files. These files are dedicated to ancient Tuscan families, providing genealogical and heraldic information drawn from archival sources found in the Florence archive or other archival institutions or libraries in the region, including a database of family coats of arms.

The General Will Index 1570–1900 is a valuable research tool for accessing wills preserved in the Modern Notarial and Post-Unification Notarial collections, drawn up or received by Tuscan notaries between 1570 and 1900. It is organized chronologically (by decade and, from 1791, every five years) and alphabetically by the testator’s surname.

Genealogists

Boasting more than a century of genealogical expertise, the Studio Araldico Genealogico Guelfi Camaiani has collected and catalogued bibliographic references related to more than 8.5 million surnames. Situated on the east side of Florence, the family-run firm can carry out some of the most accurate and in-depth genealogical research into most Italian families as well as historical monographs, providing a colour reproduction of family coats of arms, including a short historical note about the family history, and even assisting with uncertain successions regarding the legitimate ownership of coats of arms, titles and noble predicates.
