Manifattura Tabacchi, the former tobacco factory on the outskirts of the city centre, is home to all manner of exciting projects. Destination Florence takes you through two of the workshops you won’t want to miss: a Chemex coffee ritual at the Bottega Biologica and becoming a goldsmith for a day at the Fàbera Atelier.

Chemex coffee ritual

From preparation through to tasting, take part in an hour-and-a-half-long journey into the world of organic coffee, discovering the art of brewing coffee with the famous Chemex coffee maker, and sampling vegan biscuits and sweet treats from Bottega Biologica. Surrounded by the fascinating history and intriguing architecture of the Manifattura Tabacchi, you’ll be introduced to the space that tells the story of the factory’s past, embracing industrial chic with a view of the Botanical Garden designed by Antonio Peruzzi. Known for its innovative design, a Chemex coffee maker is even on display at the MoMA in New York, making it ideal for brewing the perfect cup. Sharing their secrets, experts take you through the techniques and methods that can easily be replicated at home. Then, of course, there’s time dedicated to tasting the freshly brewed coffee while enjoying a selection of handmade vegan biscuits and gluten-free sweet treats made with raw cacao. You’ll even head home with a small gift as well as all the tips on how to bring the world of organic coffee into your home.

Goldsmith for a day

Create your own jewellery with the master goldsmiths of the Fàbera Atelier. During the 2-hour workshop, you’ll use wax, silver, and semi-precious gems, engaging in a uniquely Florentine experience that leaves you with unforgettable memories as well as an original piece of jewellery of your own making! Start off by learning about the traditional method of lost wax processing at the experienced hands of Fabio, sitting at the goldsmith’s bench to discover the steps under his careful guidance as you carve, model and finish the wax. Equipped with the necessary tools, you’ll then add the semi-precious gems of your choosing before Fabio continues with the casting process using 925 silver, taking the negative made from the wax, and preparing your ready-to-wear item within 20 days.
