As Florence marks the 50th anniversary of the flood of 1966, one thing’s for sure: there’s no shortage of commemorative events and exhibitions. Most, however, highlight imagery and memories from the day of the disaster, or from its immediate aftermath. But contemporary photographer Marco Castellis “Notturno Fluviale {Arno 1966-2016}” project is firmly fixed in the present.

These 20 photographs, all taken after dark, dive under bridges along the Arno, from Falterona to Pisa. Still and surreal, Castelli’s images are a far cry from the archival flood photos currently making the rounds in local mostre and on social media, many of which depict the Arno at its “angriest”. With this series of urban landscapes, Castelli highlights the unexpected artistic value of these everyday, functional, tread-upon spaces, immortalizing them as he strips them of their standard contexts and purposes.

Notturno Fluviale {Arno 1966-2016}” will be on display at OnArt Gallery (via della Pergola 57/61r) from November 2 to November 7. A vernissage will be held on the flood anniversary, November 4, at 7pm.
