Visions of Etruscan Myths and Rites in Florence

The exhibition of five Etruscan painted terracotta slabs from ancient Caere detail various myths and rites, with the works dating to the late 6th century BC. The recent discoveries were recovered in Cerveteri in 2019 by the Guardia di Finanza.

Orchestra della Toscana

There’s nothing like a bit of classical music to start off the New Year in style. On January 14, pianist Roberto Cominati and ORT conducted by Tianyi Lu serenades audiences with the likes of Strauss and Brahms, while on January 22 violinist Kerson Leong leads us in Tchaikovsky’s op.35 for violin and orchestra, and Schubert’s Symphony n.4 D 417.

Queen At The Opera, 10th anniversary tour

Chamber music extravaganza

A chamber music extravaganza takes place on January 2, starring pianist Alessio Bax and friends, performing music by Beethoven, Schubert, Rossini and Vaughn-Williams. A second evening of chamber music will be on January 4, with Dohnanyi, Piazzolla, Rachmaninoff and Scubert forming the programme.

Commodities and Environment: Florence and the Indo-Atlantic world 1500-1800

The display is the result of a collaboration between the European Research Council Project ‘Capasia: The Asian Origins of Global Capitalism’ based at the European University Institute and the Biblioteca Riccardiana.

MARKETS

La Fierucola brings the best of biodiversity with crafts and homemade products by small-scale producers filling up stalls in popular piazzas. The Fierucolina takes place in piazza del Carmine from 9am to 2pm on January 12 and in piazza Santo Spirito from 9am to 7pm on January 19.

The popular Only Usato secondhand and vintage market comes to the Limonaia of Villa Strozzi from 11am to 7pm on January 12, with a DJ set adding to the atmosphere. Free entry.

Every second Sunday of the month, the Mangiasano bio market brings together a group of farmers and crafters in piazza Buondelmonti in Impruneta to present everything from in season fruit and vegetables to olive oil, wine, cheese, meat, leather goods, honey, jams, bread, ceramics, cosmetics and bio soap and products for the home. The next market takes place on January 12.

Florence Lights Up

Videomapping on Ponte Vecchio and Palazzo Vecchio gathers gazers to share in the Christmas spirit. Lights spread the cheer all over the main squares and monuments of the city, with decorated trees adding to the joy. There’s a wide range of activities organized both in the centre and suburbs, above all aimed at families, and even Santa Claus and his elves show up to enjoy festive Florence.

The British Institute of Florence (lungarno Guicciardini 9) commences their 2025 calendar of Wednesday Lectures with Marcella Stockstill speaking on ‘The Glittering Canopy: Renaissance Pyrotechnics’ on January 8, followed by Alexandra Lawrence’s ‘Renaissance Women of Florence’ on January 15. Linda Falcone and Federica Parretti give a lecture on ‘A painter’s Florentine Garden: Lola Costa and Il Palmerino’ on January 22, with John Hooper discussing ‘Hobbits, Space Pirates, Talking Seagulls…and The Brothers of Italy’ on January 29. The second part of the Radical Renaissance Women course takes place on January 21, looking at the creative and powerful women whose names have been left out of the mainstream history books. Bridge is weekly on Tuesdays, with afternoon tea served on Wednesdays.

Sotto al British (lungarno Guicciardini 15) hosts life drawing led by Tom J. Byrne weekly on Mondays from 7-9pm, restarting from January 20, with Lori Hetherington steering ‘Brainstorming for writers’ on January 28.

St. James Episcopal Church (via Bernardo Rucellai 9) holds a thrift sale on January 29 from 9.30am-11.30am, with a large quantity of clothes, shoes, books, homeware and more in good condition, for less than 2 euro each. They also have a boutique area that ranges from 5-50 euro. Numbered tickets are handed out from 8.15am to 9.30am to enable orderly entry.

The Florence Literary Society holds a launch party at Todo Modo, via dei Fossi 15, from 7-9pm on January 22, enjoying a glass of wine and meeting fellow writers. Free entry with ticket required via Eventbrite. The first event of the Florence Literary Society will be a writing workshop on short story beginnings and endings led by Canadian author Mark Anthony Jarman in February.

Cib’aria organizes an evening dedicated to Mediterranean cuisine and culture from 8pm on January 25 at the Beast Gallery on via di Mezzo 42. The recipes and stories of Filicudi’s women collected by Giusi Murabito are interpreted by chef Luca Corretti, and the evening also features poetry from Letizia Papi, a dive into music, and a quiz to deepen participants’ knowledge around Mediterranean culture. Lady Kendra of The Art of Style (via Romana 142/via dei Serragli 137) hosts intimate conversations on Mondays from 7-9pm, treating a different subject every week. Mindfulness & Movement is on Wednesdays from 9-11am, with meditation and yoga followed by a sound bath with a focus on a different chakra each session. A flash mob hugging fest will be held in pizza della Repubblica to mark International Hugging Day at 1pm on January 21.

The Women’s International Network of Florence holds a Q&A session with the rhythmic gymnast, aerialist, and contortionist Emilie Goldblum at 7.30pm on January 15, held at Blend Eat, Corso dei Tintori 10/12.

Female Arts in Florence (Borgo San Frediano 131r) holds events like perfume making, an introduction to abstract art and urban hand embroidery, making it well worth checking out their varied calendar.
