Based on Oscar Wilde’s play, the composer chose to set the literary source to music based on Hedwig Bachmann’s German translation. Giuseppe Verdi’s Messa da Requiem conducted by Zubin Mehta is performed on April 18, with the Maggio Musciale Fiorentino orchestra and choir performing the dramatic piece on the spectacular stage.

Find out moreA free-entry screening of the documentary film directed by Ted Hardin, “A Gathering of Strangers: the Making of The Merchant in Venice,” is dedicated to the first theatrical production of Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice in the Jewish ghetto in 2016, on the five hundredth anniversary of the foundation of the ghetto and 400 years after the death of Shakespeare, who had decided to set his work in the Venetian quarter despite never having seen it. The show, directed by Karin Coonrod, was an extraordinary event that offered numerous food for thought, which Hardin’s documentary takes up and explores in depth. The screening will be followed by a discussion with Ted Hardin (director, Columbia College Chicago), Elizabeth Coffman (film producer, Loyola University Chicago); Karin Coonrod (theater director, The Merchant of Venice, artistic director, Compagnia de’ Colombari).

Five ateliers form the exhibition itinerary that are usually reserved for individual research. The exhibition explores the role of the artist in contemporary society, considering artistic communities and their work environments as assets of collective interest. A weekly calendar of dialogues with the artists commences on March 19. Open Wednesday to Sunday, 11am to 7pm, free admission.
