An evening with Deirdre Pirro to discuss her latest book, Royals in Florence, published by The Florentine Press, will be held at 7pm on April 21 at St Mark’s English Church. The Ippodromo of Florence hosts the 195th edition of Corsa dell’Arno, “Florence’s Royal Ascot”, with horse races and designer hats in the name of charity. Following a two year hiatus, the event returns with its most beautiful hat competition in aid of Corri La Vita.
At 9pm on April 21, the Cathedral of Florence hosts an event to reflect on the futility of war, taking its message from the famous words delivered by Pope Pius XII on the eve of the Second World, “Nothing is lost with peace, everything can be lost with war”. Recitations and music will fill the Duomo, with free admission, reservation required (eventi@duomo.firenze.it). Four readings form the programming, with words by Giorgio La Pira and Padre Turoldo interspersed with classical pieces by Suoni Riflessi, including Frates, a hymn to brotherhood by the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, and the Florentine pianist and composer Alessandro Galati. The narrator will be the actor and writer, Sandro Lombardi in the event that’s organized by the Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore and artistic direction by Musicus Concentus.
At 6pm on April 21, a virtual visit to three bottegas will be streamed online by Creative People in Florence, with founders Sara Amrhein and Anna Rose leading the live-streamed tour. Join the Workshop Walkabout via Zoom.
The first edition of Preziosa Makers forms part of the programming for Florence Jewellery Week, launched by LAO Le Arti Orafe and Artigianato e Palazzo, held at the Scuderie of Palazzo Corsini al Prato, with free admission. The days dedicated to designers and artisans also takes place as part of Fuori MIDA International Handicraft Exhibition at Fortezza da Basso from April 23 to May 1. Many museums and galleries take part with exhibitions, meetings and events dedicated to contemporary jewellery, design and new technologies.
